WINTER SHADOWS AND OTHER TALES
By Mary Soon Lee

Dark Regions Press

Cover Mary Soon Lee's WINTER SHADOWS AND OTHER TALES is only 148 pages long, but includes 20 stories (four of them original to the collection) and an introduction. Lee's primarily fantasy stories are brief, but written with clean lyrical prose, immaculate structure, and offer gentle insights into humanity. Whether turning fairy tales into modern metaphors, writing of the ghosts, dealing with swords, witchcraft or the occasional dragon, Lee crafts each story with care. Each is worth reading, but "Cause and Consequence" is a particular stand-out. Lee supplies no science fictional details, but has a 20th century man sent back to 1801 by a future "traveler" to investigate Jane Austen's life. The young man, already a great admirer of the historic Miss Austen, is besotted with the real lady and it set to marry her before confronted the usual dark conundrum presented by time travel. An endearing collection from a quiet but fine writer. (I do have a complaint about a cover, though. A.B. Word's painting is a marvel, but the overall design - yellow, brown, and green lettering with a red band leaves much to be desired.)-- Paula Guran (Orginally appeared in CEMETERY DANCE #40)
